The 1 ♥ and 1 ♠ openings:

The requirements for the 1 ♥/♠ openings

(Literature: Glenn Groetheim / Alan Sontag, The Viking Precision Club, Norway 2002)

à 11-15 HP, 5+ cards in the bid major

à If one also possesses a 6 card minor as well as a 5 card major, one can freely select whether to open one of a major or 1 with 6 or respectively 2 ♣ with 6 ♣.

We open majors relatively aggressively.  In first and second position, they must be respectable, but because we can profit on the one hand from the preempt-like effect and on the other hand one can definitely sometimes make 4 or 4♠ with relatively little points, we are less reserved than in opening 1 .  The minimum in unbalanced hands is 10 HP.  Basically here also:  We open each hand if we have at least 12 HP.  If we have only 11 HP in first and second seat, we always open if we have at least 2½ defensive tricks and have no difficulties with the rebid (regardless of which bid partner has chosen).  If we do not have a rebid in all cases, we at least think seriously about a pass.

However unbalanced hands are opened aggressively in the majors.

Open e.g. 1 ♠ with                 ♠ AKxxx        or         ♠ AQxxxx

                                               ♥ xx                            KJxx

                                               ♦ Axxx                       xx

                                               ♣ xx                            ♣ xx

In particular the following points are important in deciding whether to open or not:

-          The points that you own

-          The top tricks that you own

-          The distribution of your hand

With balanced hands you need more HP for an opening than with unbalanced hands. What does one understand by top tricks? We understand by that honours and honour combinations which, both in offence and in defence, promise quick realizable tricks.

AK

à corresponds to 2 top tricks

A

à corresponds to 1 top trick

AQ

à corresponds 1½ top tricks

KQ

à corresponds to 1 top trick

K2

à corresponds to ½ top trick

So again let it be stressed in summary:  An opening in first and second seat promises either a minimum of 11 HP or else from 2½ top tricks (2 in the long suits) and a trouble-free rebid.

This changes with openings in third and fourth seat.  Here is for the following reasons opened aggressively:

-           Partner, who opens only good hands in first and second seat, must be protected.

-           Life should be made difficult for the opponents.  Therefore third hand openings in particular are also so outstandingly suitable for bluff bids.

In third and fourth seat, one can also open a 4 card major if it is reasonably good.  However, I have a small practical tip for you:  Open 4 card majors only with a good suit, because you will often play in a 4-3 trump fit (because partner always assumes a 5 card suit with you).  Further partner’s possible lead should not also end in disaster.  One should make this bluff with a 4 card suit only if one does not have the strength of at least a normal opening.  In the latter case, you open totally normally as provided for by the system in order to always reach the correct contract.

If you have a reasonable 5 card major, I recommend that you open in third and fourth seat generally from 9/10 HP.

Indeed one must still follow the Spade rule in fourth seat.  Add up your HP and add to the result your ♠ length:  If the total is less than 15, you should pass (for we do not want to open for the opponents).

Here are two examples of openings in third seat:

In general consider the following before opening with a weak hand in third seat:  Are you in a position to find a reasonable bid if for example partner bids your shortage?

The subsequent bidding after 1 ♥/♠ - the responses:

Basically the following bids are based on the 1 NT and 2 ♣ bids after major suit openings.  1 NT is a relay and forces to game.  2 ♣ is also a relay and is used with inviting hands.  1 NT is played after openings in first and second place as forcing to game.  To the responses:

The bidding after the Relay Trigger of 1 NT:

The bid of 1 NT deserves special notice as it is forcing to game after openings in first and second seat.  It shows (12)13+ HP.

Do you have doubt about not playing the bid as natural?  The advantages of playing the bid as forcing predominate by far.  It gives your bidding considerably more flexibility.  And pay attention to the following:  If one plays in 1 NT after a minor suit opening, the contract is often sound, which is rarely the case after major suit openings (especially after 1 ♠).  Experience shows that the major suit often plays better in a 5-2 fit than 1 NT.  The advantages clearly predominate:

à We can find out the distributions without losing bidding room

à Often the final contract is 3 NT; thanks to the relay of 1 NT the correct hand plays immediately, the one, that is to say, with which all enquiries are made via relay, without the opponents learning anything about this hand.  What they know, they see on the table after the lead.

After openings in first and second seat, responder can therefore start a relay with 1 NT.  After opener’s responses, the next step is always

a further relay.  If one does not know the entire distribution yet, the relay asks for further distribution; if one knows the exact distribution, the relay is an ace ask (the next relay is for kings, after that follows the queen ask).  At the same time respectively only the 4 cards are queried, this after the scheme Crash (Colour-Rank-And-SHape):

If the first ask is at the 2, 3 or 4: level:

Crash step 1:  1 or 4 aces

Crash step 2:  0 or 3 aces

Crash step 3:  2 aces of the same colour (red or black)

Crash step 4:  2 aces of the same rank, therefore in the majors or in the minors

Crash step 5:  2 aces of unequal colour or unequal rank, therefore ª and ¨ or © and §

It continues analogously after the next relay for kings and then for queens.  The bid of game in the trump suit or respectively a suit in which partner has shown 4+ cards is never a relay (then the next higher bid is the relay).

If the second or third ask is done with 5 ♣ or higher:

Crash step 1:  0 or 3 kings (queens)

Crash step 2:  1 or 4 kings (queens)

Crash step 3:  2 kings (queens) of the same colour (red or black)

Crash step 4:  2 kings (queens) of the same rank, therefore in the majors or in the minors

Crash step 5:  2 kings (queens) of unequal colour or unequal rank, therefore ª and ¨ or © and §

If the first ask occurs at 4 NT:

Crash step 1:  1 or 4 aces

Crash step 2:  0 or 3 aces

Crash step 3:  2 aces

If the first ask occurs at 5 ♣ or higher:

Crash step 1:  0 or 3 aces

Crash step 2:  1 or 4 aces

Crash step 3:  2 aces

If the response has shown an honour, one can clarify in which suit this top card is.  Instead of bidding the first relay suit, one simply bids the next higher suit (or No Trumps) which cannot be trumps (therefore has not shown 4+ cards).  The replies are as follows:

With one shown honour:

Step 1:  Honour in the longest suit (if two equally long suits:  In the lower ranking suit)

Step 2:  Honour in the second longest suit

Step 3:  Honour in the second shortest suit

Step 4:  Honour in the shortest suit

With two shown honours:

Step 1:  Honours in both longer suits

Step 2:  Honours in both shorter suits

With three shown honours:

Step 1:  The honour is missing in the shortest suit

Step 2:  The honour is missing in the second shortest suit

Step 3:  The honour is missing in the second longest suit

Step 4:  The honour is missing in the longest suit

Here too, with two equally long suits:  Show the lower suit first.

If the opponent doubles a relay by the enquirer, responder bids on as if there had been no double if he has the ace or at least king doubleton in the doubled suit. Otherwise he waits for his partner’s redouble and then bids his responses.  If on the other hand the opponent bids a suit, pass shows the first step (partner’s double is then again the relay), double the second step and so on. If the opponent doubles a response to the relay, enquirer’s pass replaces his relay (responder redoubles for step one, bids the first step for step two etc.), redouble is to play. If the opponent bids after a response within the relay sequences, enquirer’s pass replaces the relay, double on the other hand is for penalty. Responder’s first step is then double.

Responder can always break out of the relay sequences if he selects another bid.  Therewith the end contract is determined.

The 1 ♥/♠ - 2 ♣ relay:

After openings in first and second seat, 2 ♣ shows an invitational hand or a hand with about 6-10 and 6+ ♣.  Often it is a rather balanced hand with a moderate fit in opener’s suit or a hand with which one aims for 3 NT.  But also two suiters with inviting strength are bid via 2 ♣.  Further after first or second hand openings, one can also bid 2 ♣ with hands with 8-9 HP if one has no other bid and a doubleton in opener’s suit (as a rule with 2 cards in partner’s suit, 2(-3) cards in the other major as well as 4-4 or 4-5 in the minors): after openings in third or fourth seat, one bids 1 NT.

Relay, waiting bid, forcing for one round, shows hands that may accept an invitation to game if responder’s next bid discloses a fit.  Also one bids 2 with balanced distribution and 14-15 HP; bid 2 also with hands with which one still has slam ambitions because of extreme distribution.

4 :

Note that in the continuations, bidding the fourth suit is only forcing for one round (and often a stopper ask), with stronger hands, one goes as you know via the relay of 1 NT.

With all unclear hands, one investigates with the relay of 2 after 2 ♣.

After an invitation with a fit, known to both sides, if one accepts with maximum hands, one should not simply bid game but rather show with cue bids or length bids what one still has.  If one is already at the 3 level, 3 NT asks for a cue bid sequence (one of course won’t want to play that any more with a major suit fit), direct suit bids on the other hand are natural (with interest in more).

The following example shows this:

1 ♠

2 ♣

3 ♠:

3 NT now asks for cue bids, 4 ♣/4 /4 are natural. Also here partner can now show with cue bids that he likes the second suit too.

1 © - 1 ª:

After the sequence 1 © - 1 ª, bidding is to a large extent natural.  As a representative example, we look at the following sequence:

1 ©

1 ª

1 NT:

Balanced distribution, 11-14/15 HP

2 §:

4+ ♣, 11-15 HP

2 ¨:

2 ª:

3 § /¨:

3 ©:

3 ª:

4 §:

§ void, fit in ª, maximum

4 ¨:

As one has seen above, opener repeats his 6 card suit with a minimum even if he has another 4 card suit.  If need be he shows this 4 card suit later:

1 ©

1 ª

2 ©

2 ª/NT/3 §

3 ¨:

Minimum, 6 ©, 4 ¨

Permit me here to give a very important tip:  One never fights with his partner during the auction for a part score if one has no mutual fit.  It is the purpose in such cases to stop the bidding as quickly as possible!

If partner of the © opener has bid 1 ª and opener raises to the 2 level, we use long suit and short suit trials. These correspond analogously to those after the bids of 1 ª - 2 ª.

The bid of a new suit therefore shows interest in playing in 4 of responder’s major, if partner has (14)-15/16 HP (or if he has (12)13 HP and after a short suit trial likes partner’s shortage or after a long suit trial has an honour in partner’s second suit.

The direct raise of the major suit by opener to the 3 level is on the other hand pre-emptive.

3 NT:

Everything in ¨, maximum

4 ª:

Singleton ¨ is liked and is enough for game bid

Likewise it goes after short suit trials.

With strong hands (with 15 HP, a 3 card fit in partner’s suit) opener may jump exceptionally in a new suit or alternatively, may make a reverse bid.  Of a reverse, one speaks then if responder must bid already at the 3 level, provided that he wants to return to opener’s suit.

This sequence is obviously droppable because of the precise limitation.

1 ©

1 ª

2 ¨:

With 2 cards in © and a maximum of 3 cards in ¨, responder can now bid 2 © (unless he is very strong).  With 2 cards in © and 4 cards in ¨, one can pass with 6-9 HP, with 10-12 HP he should say 3 ¨!

Once again on 6-4 distribution:

2 ¨

2 ©

3 ©:

Also 5-5 distributions are special.  If one has a double fit, one should play in the weaker suit:

¨ K2

§ 4

ª KJ7

¨ A94

§ 8753

1 ª   - 2 ª

2 NT - 3 §

3 ©   - 3 ª

4 ©   - Pass

To the bidding: 2 NT is a long suit trial, 3 § is a relay, 3 © shows © and asks about support in ©. Partner declines with 3 ª. 4 © now is natural, now one knows that opener is 5-5.

Basically if partner shows two suits, one should select the first mentioned as the trump suit.  In a two suiter with at least 5-5, this is different when it is clear that partner must utilize his other suit.  In such cases, one selects the weaker suit with the same length - as in our example - as trumps.  Because there are two honours in ª but none in ©, one passes 4 ©. In our example, 4 © with a § lead is not a problem, a ª contract has no chance. One does not bring in the second suit (©) in time and becomes shortened in trumps with §.

Modified Two way Drury

As you know we open aggressively in third and fourth seat.  Further one can certainly try a bluff bid here in exceptional cases.  Therefore it is indispensable after major suit openings to play a convention with which we can ascertain whether partner now really has a good opening or not.

Therefore the following applies:

If a major suit was opened in third or fourth seat, we play modified Two way Drury.  The bids of 2 § and 2 ¨ are not natural and ask for opener’s strength. With 2 ¨ one has exactly a 3 card fit, with 2 § on the other hand one has 4+ cards in opener’s suit.  If opener is weak, he rebids his suit in both cases.

If the opponent doubles after third and four hand openings in a major, redouble is Drury.  Here we can basically no longer distinguish between a 3 card fit or a fit of 4 cards (unless the second opponent bids also).

If the second opponent passes, one can pass with three or four cards in the opening suit.

If opener bids again, he shows at least a moderate opening.  With 5 cards and minimum, opener rebids 2 of his suit.  The remaining bids are again natural (at least Qxx) and show a good opening (or better).

If the second opponent bids after partner’s redouble, the bid of the opening suit again shows weakness and 5 cards in the opening suit.  Pass also shows weakness, further however that one only possesses 3 or 4 cards in the opening suit.  Double on the other hand is penalty.  The remaining bids are again natural (at least Qxx) and show a good opening (or better).

1 ♥ - 2 ♠

The jump to 2 ª after 1 © (1st and 2nd positions) shows 5-8 HP and 6 ♠, further suggests a misfit in © (as a rule a singleton or a void, at most however a doubleton).

This also has certain further effects:

1 ©

Roudi/Magister:

After the 1 © opening, we use the Roudi convention when required as after the 1 opening, which the French top player Roudinescu who unfortunately died at the end of 2001 named after himself, (however the Polish player Magister also lays claim to having invented the convention).

3 § :

3 ¨ :

And do not forget:  As a result of Roudi, in the following example 2 NT is a transfer to § (shows a weak hand with 6 § as well as the already shown 4 ª):

3 ª:

If on the other hand one has 6 ª and 11-12 HP and one would merely like to invite game, one goes via Roudi. Then one finds out everything one wants to know.

Meaning of the bid

1 NT

2 §

2 NT

3 ª:

6 ª, inviting, a problem with the quality of the ª suit, it needs a good doubleton ª from partner

Also the jump in a new suit or in opener’s suit has a special meaning, and shows explicitly a two suiter (at least 5-5); because however one did not relay with 1 NT, this only shows 10-11(12) HP.

3 ©:

If one has 11-12 HP, but only 4 of the second suit, one first bids Roudi and afterwards the suit naturally.

Illogical Jumps:

If opener makes an illogical jump after partner’s response, this shows a fit in partner’s suit and a void in the bid suit.  Why a void?  Only this is meaningful with a hand below game strength with partner.

Example:

1 ©

1 ª

4 §:

§ void, good fit in ª, pretty well maximum

4 ¨:

¨ void, good fit in ª, pretty well maximum

And yet this:

Somewhat special is the further bidding after the rebid of one’s suit at the 3 level:

Opener

Responder

Meaning of the bids

1 ©

1 ª

3 ©

3 ª:

5+ ª, forcing to 3 NT

This gives us the necessary flexibility to find the correct final contract.

Raises of the opening to the 2 level – long and short suit trials:

If partner raised our major opening to the 2 level, we play long and short suit trials.  The bid of a new suit therefore shows interest in playing in 4 of the opened major, if the partner has (7)8-9 HP (or if he has (6)7 HP and after a short suit trial likes partner’s shortage or after a long-suit-try also has an honour in partner’s second suit).  Note that we only make these bids if our limited opening has a chance of making game because of its unbalanced distribution.  As a rule one has 15 HP.  If one shows a second suit, as a rule this shows (3)4+ cards (searching for that double fit).

On the other hand, the direct raise of the major by opener to the3 level is pre-emptive.

Opening 1 of a suit à Recapitulation:

There are again and again special sequences that one can play as forcing or non-forcing.  Some are shown below.

1

1 ª

2 ª

3

Despite the double fit, this sequence is only inviting to game - with a strong hand, responder would have begun with the relay of 1 NT.

A sequence major suit – minor suit - minor suit - major suit is inviting (otherwise responder would have begun with 1 NT); now new suits are cue bids.

This sequence is forcing (with weak hands one bids 2 NT instead of 3 ).

3 X is non-forcing.

3 ª

3 ª is only inviting; the bid shows 3 ♠ and 10-12 HP. 2 ♣ is a relay.

3 ♠

A jump to the 3 level in one’s own suit is inviting to 4 ♠ with 7 ♠ and (9)10(11) HP.

If we have bid One over One and the opponent intervenes at the 1, 2 or 3 level, our double is negative; à it promises 3 card support in responder’s suit (Support double).

If we have bid Two over One and the opponent intervenes at the 2 level, our double is penalty.

If we opened 1 in a suit and the opponent intervenes, double jump bids are splinters (and show a fit):
